How do sperm banks generally operate?

In other words, how is sperm donated, collected and kept? First of all, sperm donors who wish to donate sperm through a sperm bank have to go through a series of tests, meaning that the help they offer can be turned down at an early stage of the process. After having passed a preliminary evaluation and been informed of their rights and psychological possible side-effects, sperm donors are required to produce sperm the old-fashioned way: by masturbating in a private room.

The collected sperm is then thoroughly tested, frozen and screened again, in order to rule out any infectious or genetic disease. Cryoconservation, meaning that sperm samples are stored in liquid nitrogen, allows storing the spermatozoids for years.Sperm thaws are then delivered to fertility clinics, or, in countries that do not prevent it like the US, directly purchased by intended parents.
